In Apex Legends, a close-range SMG can be the right pick for a fast entry fight while an assault rifle or marksman gun may be stronger when your squad controls space. Start with the fight you expect to take, then compare damage output, recoil, reload timing, effective range, and the attachments you can realistically find.

What Makes an Apex Weapon S-Tier?

Range and role

A strong weapon answers a common combat problem. Pair close-range pressure with a gun that can hold a lane or punish a retreat instead of building two weapons for the same distance.

Consistency

Damage on paper is only one part of a ranking. Recoil, sight picture, fire mode, reload timing, and how quickly a player can land follow-up shots often decide whether a gun is reliable in a real fight.

Economy and attachments

Ammo availability, magazine size, hop-up value, and attachment access change a weapon's practical tier. A powerful gun that needs rare parts may be less useful early in a Ranked match.

Mode and team context

Season 30 changed more than individual damage values. The official Marked patch notes moved the G7 Scout back to floor loot and placed the 30-30 Repeater in the Care Package, so availability is part of the current weapon conversation. The patch also reduced the damage or magazine strength of several short-range options, including the Alternator, RE-45, and R-99, while changing how players evaluate energy weapons and attachments.

Energy ammo boxes were removed from the loot pool. Energy weapons now bring a regenerating stockpile, so they can feel strong in shorter fights but require more planning in a long, sustained engagement.
Corrupted Attachments add a real trade-off: only one can be equipped on a gun, and each combines a meaningful bonus with a drawback. That makes the same weapon worth ranking differently for an entry fragger and an anchor.
