Make a tier list
Make every choice clear

Plan a better ranking with this Tier List Maker

A useful list does more than place favorites at the top. It gives every item the same question, uses tier names that readers understand, and makes the final result easy to scan. The editor handles the layout; the guidance below helps you make decisions that feel consistent.

01

Choose one clear question

Start by deciding what the board measures. “Best characters for beginners” produces a different result from “favorite character designs,” even when both lists use the same images. Write the question in the title field before you rank anything. A narrow title keeps your choices consistent and helps anyone viewing the exported PNG understand what the rows mean.

If a topic is broad, split it into separate boards. Movies can be ranked by rewatch value, story, visual style, or personal enjoyment. Games can be compared by difficulty, competitive strength, soundtrack, or accessibility. One criterion per board is usually easier to defend and easier to share.

02

Define the tiers before placing items

S through D is familiar, but those letters do not explain your standard on their own. Decide what qualifies for each row before dragging items. For a food ranking, S might mean “would order every time,” while C could mean “fine, but not memorable.” For a competitive game, the rows might describe reliability, team value, or how often a choice works in common situations.

You can select any row label to rename it and change its color. Labels such as “Essential,” “Worth trying,” “Situational,” and “Skip” often communicate more than letters. Add another row when two genuinely different judgments are being forced together; avoid adding rows only to make the board look busier.

03

Prepare images that stay readable

Square or similarly cropped images make a board easier to compare. Use clear subjects, avoid tiny text inside the image, and keep important faces or objects near the center. JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF files are accepted, with a limit of 10 MB per file. You can add up to 200 items, although a shorter list is often easier for viewers to discuss.

If you do not have a complete image set, choose a template and edit from there. The current library includes football players, EXO members, League of Legends champions, and 141 Uma Musume characters. You can also switch to Text Mode when names and short phrases work better than pictures.

Ideas and use cases

What can you rank?

Almost any set of comparable items can become a useful board. The strongest topics give people a reason to agree, disagree, or build a version of their own. Start with one of these approaches, then adjust the criterion to fit your audience.

Games and fandoms

Compare characters, weapons, maps, updates, bosses, abilities, or story chapters. For competitive topics, state the mode, patch, role, or skill level in the title so the result has enough context. For personal lists, make it clear that the order reflects preference rather than universal strength.

Movies, television, and anime

Rank a franchise by story, performances, villains, finales, costumes, or rewatch value. A board can cover an entire series or focus on one season. Keeping the scope visible prevents a thoughtful opinion from being mistaken for a claim about every adaptation or release.

Music, sports, and creators

Arrange albums, songs, performances, athletes, teams, or memorable moments. Time periods matter here: a career ranking and a current-season ranking answer different questions. Add the year or era to the title when the list could become outdated or when several generations are being compared.

Food, books, and everyday choices

Build lists for restaurant menus, snacks, recipes, novels, study tools, travel ideas, or products you already know. Use practical tier labels such as “Buy again,” “Borrow,” or “Not for me.” Specific labels turn a simple opinion board into a recommendation that friends can understand quickly.

Finish and share

Turn a draft into a readable PNG

Review the board once before downloading. Look for items that were placed by a different standard, rows that contain too many choices, and labels that need a clearer name. Moving one or two borderline items is often enough to make the overall logic easier to follow.

The Tier List Maker exports the completed rows as a PNG. Uploaded images are processed in the browser in this version, so they are not sent to a server by the ranking editor. The exported image is suitable for a group chat, Discord discussion, Reddit post, presentation, or social video. If you publish it, include the question or criterion in the accompanying text; context makes disagreement more useful.
